In this study, predictive simulations were conducted in order to understand recovery behavior of groundwater environment during groundwater filling test and underground facility closure. As a result of predictive simulations of groundwater filling test, difference of groundwater environment changes around the closure test drift according to groundwater filling volume was confirmed quantitatively. As a result of the simulations, groundwater environment changes at 10 years after underground facility closure could be estimated. And, it was shown that up-corning of deep saline water through drift and shaft was occurred if hydraulic conductivity of backfill material is higher than host rock.

Japan Nuclear Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting the groundwater recovery experiment to develop a methodology to estimate the geological environment recovery after closure of the drift at GL-500m in Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory, Japan. For the experiment, an impervious concrete plug was constructed to maintain a recovered water pressure and its functions were assessed based on the monitoring results and interpretation of several kinds of measurements performed inside and outside of the plug during groundwater recovery test. This report summarized the change of the condition of the plug due to groundwater recovery estimated based on the different kinds of monitoring data.

In this study, inverse analysis using observed data of pumping test was carried for confirmation of the applicability of inverse analysis method of groundwater flow based on in-situ data. Target of this inverse analysis was spatial distribution of hydrogeological heterogeneity of the fault. Inverse analysis had been applied to the area around the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory, which is constructed by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency in order to construct scientific and technological basis for geological disposal of High-level Radioactive Waste. As a result of this study, the estimated results of inverse analysis are consistent with previous study result, and it was concluded that inverse analysis using hydraulic response due to pumping test is effective for hydrogeological characterization in deep underground.

In the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory, Groundwater REcoverty Experiment in Tunnel (GREET) is performed to understanding the recovery process of geological environment after the closure of drift. In this experiment, we performed 2D electrical resistivity surveys three times. First survey was performed before the closure of test drift. Second and third surveys were performed after the closure test. The first survey detected two layers conformation that consists of conductive and resistive zones at shallower and deeper part from the drift surface, respectively. These layers correspond to the shotcrete and host rock, respectively. Second and third measurements show that the conductive zone expanded to deeper resistive part while the shallower conductive part did not change. We concluded that we captured the saturation process of dried fractures near the drift wall by closure of drift as an electrical resistivity response.

The Groundwater REcovery Experiment in Tunnel (GREET) was put into effect as development of drift backfilling technologies. This test was conducted by making the Closure Test Drift (CTD) recovered with water after carrying out a plug around 40m distance from northern edge face of horizontal tunnel of depth 500m, for the purpose of investigation of recovering process of rock mass and groundwater under the influence of excavation of tunnel. This report presents the efforts of backfilling investigation using bentonite composite soil and execution of backfilling into borehole pits excavated in the CTD which were carried out in fiscal 2014 as a part of GREET, and succeeding observation results inside pits from September 2014 to March 2016.

Rock masses serve a vital function as natural barriers for geological disposal of radioactive waste; therefore, information on rock permeability is essential. Highly accurate measurement of permeability requires understanding of how temperature changes in the surrounding environment influence measurement results. We performed permeability measurement under conditions with dramatic changes of temperature in the surrounding environment to investigate the influence of such changes on the experimental results. Measurement of permeability with no temperature change was also conducted as reference. All measurements were conducted using the transient pulse method, and the sample material used was Toki granite obtained from Gifu Prefecture in central Japan. We found that temperature changes in the surrounding environment remarkably affected the pressure in reservoirs upstream and downstream, the pressure difference between them, and the confining pressure; all increased when temperature increased for our experimental system. Notably, pressure difference was affected immediately. This difference directly relates to estimation of permeability.

We had been conducted to study hydraulic permeability along fracture intersection by NETBLOCK system using natural rock specimen. Since the permeability of this rock specimen fracture is high, it was suggest that turbulent flow might be occurred in available range of measurement system. In case of turbulent flow, estimated permeability and fracture aperture from test data tend to be low. Therefore we should achieve laminar flow. This study was used the high viscosity liquid instead of water, and test conditions which could attain laminar flow with the rock specimen was examined. The rock specimen is granite rock, has natural Y-type fractures intersection. A solution of Methyl-cellulose is used as high viscosity liquid. Due to the high viscosity liquid, hydraulic head could be measured in the wide range, and high viscosity liquid improved the accuracy of measurement. Laminar flow could be achieved in the rock specimen by the high viscosity liquid over 0.1wt%.

Handling methods and test conditions of hydraulic tests for NETBLOCK system had been examined by using acrylic and/or artificial rock specimen. A natural rock specimen (granite : excavated from Kamaishi mine) with fracture intersection was formed into practicable size for NETBLOCK system. Recently, we conducted a series of hydraulic test, in order to study the influence of fracture intersection by using the natural rock specimen. Hydraulic tests were conducted under several centimeters of head, which could be controlled by improved system because hydraulic permeability of target fractures were high. As a result, 1010(m/s) orders of hydraulic transmissivity of target fractures could be measured. A low permeability in the NW direction at the lower fracture was estimated from the heterogeneous head distribution. However, it is also expected that turbulence flow might be occurred under this study condition because fracture permeability is high and flow rate through the fracture is relatively high. In case of turbulence-flow, an estimated hydraulic transmissivity is low. High-viscosity fluid hydraulic test to achieve laminar flow will be needed for correcting an evaluated transmissivity.

ln experimental study for the thermohydraulics of fast reactor, a simple experiment with fine measurement has been desired for understanding of phenomena and for verification of computer code rather than mockup experiments of large scale. For such purposes quality of experimental data must be improved. ln the velocity measurement, instantaneous velocity profile will have great advances for the understanding of phenomena and for the verification of computer code. ln this report two methods of the velocity profile measurement are discussed; one is ultrasound Doppler velocimetry (UDV) and the other is particle image velocimetry (PIV). These methods were applied to water experiments. The UDV was applied to pipe flow, planer jet, and the inter-wrapper flow which is seen in the gap region between subassemblies of fast reactor core. Cross check with laser Doppler velocimetly showed proper measurement of the UDV. Problems including the application to sodium experiments are also discussed. The PIV was also applied to the inter-wrapper flow. For the application to complex flow geometry, noise reduction method was developed to improve the measurement accuracy.

Cementitious materials will be used in TRU waste disposal repository. In such cases, it is considered that the migration of alkaline leachates from cementitious materials, so called high pH plume, will cause dissolution of rock and precipitation of secondary minerals. In addition, the high pH plume will move along the flow of groundwater, so it is predicted that rock formation and components of high pH groundwater vary with time and space. However, time and spatial dependence of the variations of secondary minerals and groundwater components has not been clarified. In order to acquire the data of variations of secondary minerals and groundwater components, we carried out the rock alteration experiments with column method. The crushed granodiorite was filled into 4 meters length column (3.7 cm) and artificial cement leachate (pH=13.3; Na=0,1 mol/l, K=0.1 mol/l, Ca=0.002 mol/l) was streamed at flow rates of 0.1 ml/min for 7 months at 80C. As the result, secondary minerals confirmed on the rock were calcite and C-S-H at upstream of column and C-S-H at mid-downstream. The pH value of the fluid dominated by Na and K did not be decreased by reaction with the rock. In this study, the data relating to the effect of high pH plume on rock over the long term was acquired.

The buffer material is expected to maintain its low water permeability, self-sealing properties, radionuclides adsorption and retardation properties, thermal conductivity, chemical buffering properties, overpack supporting properties, stress buffering properties, etc. over a long period of time. Natural clay is mentioned as a material that can relatively satisfy above. Among the kinds of natural clay, bentonite when compacted is superior because (1)it has exceptionally low water permeability and properties to control the movement of water in buffer, (2)it fills void spaces in the buffer and fractures in the host rock as it swells upon water uptake, (3)it has the ability to exchange cations and to adsorb cationic radioelements. In order to confirm these functions for the purpose of safety assessment, it is necessary to evaluate buffer properties through laboratory tests and engineering-scale tests, and to make assessments based on the ranges in the data obtained. This report describes the procedures, test conditions, results and examinations on the buffer material of unconfined compression tests, one-dimensional consolidation tests, consolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests and consolidated-undrained triaxial creep tests that aim at getting hold of static mechanical properties. We can get hold of the relationship between the dry density and tensile stress etc. by Brazillian tests, between the dry density and unconfined compressive strength etc. by unconfined compression tests, between the consolidation stress and void ratio etc. by one-dimensional consolidation tests, the stress pass of each effective confining pressure etc. by consolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests and the axial strain rate with time of each axial stress etc. by consolidated-undrained triaxial creep tests.

It is an important part of the near field perfformance assessment of nuclear waste disposal to evaluate coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (T-H-M) phenomena, e.g., thermal effects on groundwater flow through rock matrix and water seepage into the buffer material, the generation of swelling pressure of the buffer material, and thermal stresses potentially affecting porosity and fracture apertures of the rock. An in-situ T-H-M experiment named 'Engineered Barrier Experiment' has been conducted at the Kamaishi Mine, of which host rock is granodiorite, in order to establish conceptual models of the coupled T-H-M processes and to build confidence in mathematical models and computer codes. In 1995, fourteen boreholes were excavated in order to install the various sensors. After the hydraulic tests, mechanical tests were carried out to obtain the rock properties. After that, a test pit, 1.7m in diameter and 5.0m in depth, was excavated. During the excavation, the change of pore pressure, displacement and temperature of rock mass were measured. In 1996, the buffer material and heater were set up in the test pit, and then coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical test was started. The duration of heating phase was 250 days and that of cooling phase was 180 days. The heater surface was controlled to be 100C during heating phase. Measurment, was carried out by a number pf sensors installed in both buffer and rock mass during the test. The field experiment leads to a better understanding of the behavior of the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical phenomena in the near field.
